Core Points of 304 Stainless Steel: Global Applications & CNC Machining (Abridged Version)
I. Key Application Features in Global Manufacturing
304 is a general-purpose austenitic stainless steel, boasting core advantages of corrosion resistance, excellent formability/weldability/machinability, and high cost performance. It accounts for over 50% of the world's stainless steel output, suitable for 90% of conventional scenarios, and is universally used across industries. However, it is not resistant to seawater, high temperatures or strong corrosion. Its core features are as follows:
- Universality: A basic grade for civil and general industrial use, resistant to weak acids, weak alkalis and atmospheric corrosion.
- Process Compatibility: Compatible with forming, welding, cutting and surface treatment, with strong production line adaptability.
- Cross-industry Usability: Widely applied in food and beverage, chemical industry, automotive, electronics, construction and other fields.
- High Cost Performance: A low-cost alternative to high-end stainless steels such as 316, with a mature global supply chain.
II. Key Considerations for CNC Machining
Core pain points: tool adhesion, work hardening, poor heat dissipation
Machining principle: rapid feed, high-speed cutting, large depth of cut, effective chip breaking, efficient heat dissipation
Five core requirements:
- Cutting Tools: Adopt stainless steel-specific cemented carbide tools or cobalt-containing high-speed steel tools (M35/M42). Chamfer the tool nose, use a large rake angle, select fewer-flute milling cutters, and grind wide and deep chip breakers.
- Cutting Parameters: Adopt low rotational speed, high feed rate and large depth of cut; distinguish parameters for rough and finish machining; avoid small depth of cut and slow feed rate. Adopt low speed for tapping and drilling, and retract the tool to remove chips midway.
- Processes: Strictly separate rough and finish machining, reduce the number of tool passes, prioritize climb milling, process thin-walled parts in separate sequences, and perform intermediate solution annealing if work hardening is severe.
- Cooling & Lubrication: Dry cutting is strictly prohibited. Use stainless steel-specific extreme pressure emulsion or sulfided cutting oil, with high-pressure and large-flow pouring. Adopt internal cooling for deep hole machining.
- Clamping: Use soft jaws for clamping, increase the contact area, add a follow rest for slender shafts, and control the clamping force for thin-walled parts to prevent deformation and scratch.
III. Core Misunderstandings to Avoid
- Using tools and parameters for carbon steel
- Adopting small depth of cut and slow feed rate for finish machining
- Insufficient cooling and lubrication
- Failing to separate rough and finish machining
- Excessive clamping force
