Precautions for Storage and Rust Prevention of 304 Stainless Steel Machined Parts (Condensed Version)
After machining, the passivation film on the surface of 304 stainless steel is easily damaged, and impurities may remain. If not properly protected, rusting may still occur. The following are the core points for storage and rust prevention to ensure the quality of the workpieces.
I. Core Storage Requirements
(1) Environment Control
Store in a dry and well-ventilated indoor area (temperature 5℃-35℃, relative humidity ≤65%), away from corrosive substances such as acids, alkalis, salt spray, and carbon steel parts; lay moisture-proof pads on the ground, do not place workpieces directly on the ground, and regularly replace damp pads.
(2) Storage Specifications
Classify and store according to specifications and status to avoid stacking and squeezing; the stacking height of finished/precision parts shall not exceed 1.5 meters, and buffer materials shall be added between layers; for workpieces stored for more than 3 months, inspect and turn them over monthly, focusing on blind holes, grooves and other parts prone to dirt accumulation.
II. Key Rust Prevention Measures
(1) Post-Machining Pretreatment
Timely remove cutting fluid, iron chips and other impurities on the surface with neutral cleaning agent (pH 6-8) or high-pressure water gun, and dry thoroughly after cleaning; high-precision workpieces or those stored for a long time need passivation treatment to form a dense protective film.
(2) Daily Protection
For short-term storage (1-3 months), apply special anti-rust oil; for long-term storage (more than 6 months), use anti-rust paper wrapping, vacuum packaging or sealed anti-rust boxes (with desiccants inside); operators shall wear clean gloves, handle with care during transportation to avoid collision and scratch.
(3) Regular Maintenance
Record the ambient temperature and humidity weekly, and conduct a comprehensive inspection of the workpieces monthly; if rust, damage to protective materials and other problems are found, handle them in a timely manner and update the protective measures.
III. Avoid Common Misunderstandings
1. Misunderstanding: 304 stainless steel never rusts. Correction: Rusting is likely to occur after the passivation film is damaged, so standardized protection is required; 2. Misunderstanding: Replace special anti-rust oil with ordinary engine oil. Correction: Special anti-rust oil has more stable protective effect; 3. Misunderstanding: Store immediately without drying after cleaning. Correction: Residual moisture is easy to cause rusting, so thorough drying is necessary.
In summary, the core of storage and rust prevention for 304 stainless steel machined parts is to control the environment, prevent pollution, do a good job in protection and conduct regular inspections. Standardizing the operation of each link can effectively extend the service life of the workpieces.
