Building hardware international standards serve as the universal language of global manufacturing and a core threshold for enterprises to enter the international market. Meanwhile, technical barriers represent the key competitive advantage maintained by leading enterprises. This section focuses on the core international standards, technical thresholds, and industry impacts of building hardware, analyzing the pivotal role of international standards and technical barriers in global manufacturing, to provide references for enterprises to break through technical bottlenecks and enter the international market in compliance.
Global building hardware standards are divided into three major systems:
EU EN series standards, US ANSI series standards, and Japanese JIS series standards, supplemented by general standards issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
These standards cover material, dimension, performance, service life, safety, and other aspects, with overall requirements higher than China’s National Standards (GB), making them mandatory for enterprises targeting the international market.
(1) EU EN Series Standards (Core Standards)
The EU applies the strictest building hardware standards worldwide. The EN series covers door and window hardware, structural connectors, sanitary hardware, and other products. Key standards include:
- EN 1906: Classification, requirements and test methods for door and window hardware
- EN 12209: Corrosion test method (salt spray) for door and window hardware
- EN 1627: Burglary resistance standard for doors and windows
- EN 13126: Safety requirements for building glass hardware
- EN 14411: Performance requirements for construction fasteners
Key requirements:
- EN 1906: Operating cycle life ≥ 100,000 times for high-end door/window hardware; ≥ 50,000 times for standard hardware.
- EN 12209: High-end hardware must pass ≥ 1,000 hours of salt spray testing with no visible corrosion.
- EN 1627: Defines six burglary resistance classes (RC1–RC6). RC2 requires over 30 minutes of prying resistance; RC4 requires over 15 minutes. Most high-end buildings require at least RC2.
(2) US ANSI Series Standards
US building hardware standards emphasize safety, durability and compatibility. Core standards include:
- ANSI A156.1: Performance requirements for door and window hardware
- ANSI A156.2: Performance requirements for hinges
- ANSI A156.115: Safety standard for smart locks
- ANSI B117.1: Salt spray corrosion test standard
Key requirements:
- ANSI A156.1: Operating cycle life ≥ 100,000 times; load capacity must meet architectural application requirements.
- ANSI B117.1: Outdoor building hardware must pass ≥ 500 hours of salt spray testing for outdoor corrosion resistance.
- ANSI A156.115: Strict requirements for anti-theft performance, password security, emergency release, and other functions, serving as the core standard for smart hardware entering the US market.
(3) Japanese JIS Series Standards
Japanese building hardware standards emphasize precision and compatibility. Core standards include:
- JIS B 1181: Dimensions and performance of bolts and nuts
- JIS H 3100: Copper and copper alloy sheets
- JIS G 4305: Stainless steel sheets
- JIS A 1510: Performance of door and window hardware
Key requirements:
- Extremely high dimensional accuracy: e.g., bolt diameter tolerance within ±0.01 mm.
- Strong focus on environmental performance: heavy metal content must comply with Japanese environmental regulations, matching local architectural styles and usage requirements.
(4) ISO General Standards
ISO develops universal building hardware standards widely referenced globally, including:
- ISO 898-1: Performance requirements for high-strength bolts
- ISO 10605: Salt spray corrosion test standard
- ISO 12944: Protective coating standards
Most national and regional standards are refined and upgraded based on ISO fundamentals.
