Material Selection Guidelines for Connector Fasteners
For fastener-type connectors providing both mechanical fastening and electrical/signal transmission:
- Electrical & Thermal Conductivity: Copper, brass, pure copper, aluminum, copper alloys. Stainless steel and carbon steel have poor conductivity and are suitable only for structural applications.
- Mechanical Strength & Fastening Performance: High-strength brass, bronze, tinned copper, stainless steel for high load/vibration environments. Avoid hard materials for thin-walled/fragile parts.
- Corrosion Resistance & Environmental Adaptability: Tin, nickel, gold, or silver plating for humid/salt spray/outdoor environments. Copper-nickel alloy or high-corrosion-resistant brass for seawater/chemical environments. Avoid dissimilar metal contact.
- Contact Resistance & Oxidation Resistance: Gold, silver, or tin plating to prevent overheating and oxidation-related failures, especially for higher currents.
- Machinability & Assembly Performance: Brass or pure copper for cold pressing, riveting, bending. Free-cutting brass for turning and milling operations.
- Cost & Standardization: Brass with tin plating for signal/low current applications. Gold plating for high frequency/high precision. Pure copper/copper bars for high current applications.
